Port Lincoln City Highlights
Port Lincoln sits upon Boston Bay, Australia’s second largest harbour and home to Australia’s largest fishing fleet where you can match a local Chardonnay with the tastiest crustaceans, while discovering Australia’s seafood Capital. Learn of the life style and of the many taste sensations the region has to offer on this half day tour.
Port Lincoln is Australia’s Seafood Capital, producing a diverse range of premium grade seafood, as well as being a major export seaport for agricultural products from the region.
With a growing reputation as a viable wine region, we commence with a tasting tour of a local winery set on the hills above Port Lincoln. Ascending further to the summit of Winters Hill we gain a scenic vista across the bays and land mass of Lower Eyre Peninsula. To the east on a clear day the extent of Australia’s second largest natural harbour becomes apparent with its many islands, sheltered bays and coves. To the south Sleaford Mere, Fishery Bay, and the Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm producing green energy for the region and to the west Coffin Bay and the Marble Ranges, skirted by rich farming land.
Port Lincoln is renowned for its rich sea harvest and the millionaire fishermen status is on display, with their luxury homes over looking Boston Bay, laying testament to the wealth of the sea. Descending to the foreshore we visit Axel Stenross Maritime Museum an assembly of local fishing and shipping history – the people, their boats and the cargoes. Port Lincoln was a major grain export port in the early 1900’s and was famously part of the sailing clipper’s Great Grain Races around the world. Today boasting 3 jetties and a large marina the wharfing activities are endless as boats tie up to unload and ships berth to load the bounty from land and sea. Hear of the different fisheries as diverse as calamari is to tuna, as abalone is to sardines, each with their own specialised boats and each with their own taste and texture. The last stop for the day is to a local seafood company to purchase your favourite delicacy (own expense).
