Lincoln National Park
The day starts with a transfer from your accommodation to the Lincoln Cove Marina where you will join your cruise. Crossing Boston Bay we pass the feed boats busy on the tuna farms. Upon rounding Cape Donington and its fur seal colony we pass close by the beaches and rocky headlands that make up the untouched wilderness of the Lincoln National Park.
Further south is Seal Cove on Hopkins Island, where we begin out underwater adventure and meet some excitable play mates.
The Australian Sea Lion is often described as the puppy dog of the sea because of their naturally friendly manner, playful disposition and innocent eyes. Donning wetsuits and flippers we enter their world to be entertained and enthralled by their somersaults and back flips, graceful glides and cheeky engagements as we try to imitate their play.
Returning to Port Lincoln after working up an appetite in the water we take some time for lunch at the spectacularly situated Marina Hotel. Here we will indulge our senses, enjoying a selection of local seafood whilst watching the bustling adjacent wharfs as the fishermen unloading their catches and load supplies ready for the next trip.
In the afternoon we will explore Lincoln National Park. Highlights include the views from the 200m high cliffs overlooking the ocean to the Neptune and Wedge islands – the perfect backdrop as you hear tales of the early seafarers and whalers who plied their trade in the region.
Further inland an abundance of wildlife is discovered in the low eucalyptus scrub. See Grey Kangaroos, emus and the endangered Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo in their natural habitat. The abundant wildlife and diverse eco system keeps a keen eye well rewarded. Scattered amongst the scrub are water bores supplying potable fresh water from the Uley basin to Port Lincoln and Eyre Peninsula.
The park is also home to the most ancient organism on the planet – the Stromatolite cyanobacteria, which can be found in the land locked salt lake of Sleaford Mere.
Reaching the shore of Proper Bay we pass the site of where Mathew Flinders discovered fresh water, taking on over 20 tons to replenish his supplies. We pass Tulka, once an isolated fishing village and now a pleasant waterfront suburb, before continuing on along Proper Bay to Port Lincoln. |
