Day 2

Getting ready to hit the waterFlippers and Feet begins with an early morning transfer to the marina to board your boat cruise. Cross Boston Bay to the southern entrance, past tuna farms and Cape Donnington. Turn south through Thorny Passage past Taylors Island and Shag Cove to a dolphin pod we encounter along the way. We skirt the dramatic coastal scenery of the Lincoln National Park as we cruise to Hopkins Island – home to a colony of young Australian Sealions who are always in for a play! Ample time is allowed for the playfully agile sealions and their ungainly lethargic interlopers to form an enlightening if not awkward relationship. The cute faces and big soft eyes are not easily forgotten. Return to Port Lincoln for a seafood lunch overlooking the busy marina wharf. The afternoon is an overland experience with our 4WD negotiating the bush tracks to spectacular coastal lookouts over the Southern Ocean to the Neptune Islands (Great White Sharks) Thistle Island and beyond. Inland and sheltered from the coastal winds the ecosystem is quite dense and abounds with prolific wildlife in this wilderness protection area. Kangaroos, Emus, and colourful birds of all sizes are represented in this diverse landscape, before arriving at Sleaford Mere a shallow land locked salt lake and home to Stromatolite Cyanobacteria.
A search of the Manor Gums reveals Koalas happily dozing at Mikkira Station, heading into Port Lincoln we pass Tulka a small fishing village on the shores of Proper Bay and the site of Mathew Flinders’ discovery of badly needed fresh water for his epic voyage of discovery around Southern Australia.
